The privacy breaches and frequent security glitches have proven fateful for Facebook. The once popular king that ruled the world of social media is no longer admired. People are turning their backs on Facebook rapidly. With the increasing and popular competitors, Facebook is losing hope as well as the popularity it once enjoyed. The company is making attempted to regain the status it once had. So far they have not been successful and new ideas are meeting the set-backs.
The new meme platform
It was revealed last month that Facebook is introducing a new app, a sort of meme sharing application. The prime target of this launch was the teens. The app was supposed to include funny videos, gifs, and memes. The name was LOL. But the launch never came through.
Initial testing
The app was initially tested among the group of 100 teens in a controlled environment. This was to see the reaction from teens if the application is launched globally. LOL had three reaction options funny, alright and not funny.
The response
The reaction from the participating teens was not very promising. TechCrunch quotes that the platform was regarded as ‘cringe’. This marks the flop of this app among the young population. This suggests that this innovation was not able to grasp the attention of generation Z’s meme followers and meme-obsessed beings. The data also shows that teens are relying on Instagram a lot more than Facebook to satisfy their thirst for memes.
Why did it fail?
The first and the foremost, reason behind this failure was the presence of already developed applications that have memes; a new app wasn’t much needed. Moreover, the meme data present on LOL was weeks old, which is not healthy in promoting such apps. The reason lies in the fact that in the meme world, the old ones die out rather quickly and their place is taken up by new ones every day. In a fast pacing world weeks old data doesn’t stay entertaining anymore, and teens like to keep themselves up to date.

Lastly, the trust of the Facebook users has been broken so many times with the privacy issues that they don’t prefer to rely upon it anymore. The need of time is to improve the glitches in Facebook not the introduction of the new app.
