In the event of the total collapse of the world, due to World War 3, natural disasters, global warming, access to technology is going to be a major factor for your survival.
In a post-apocalyptic world, be it a nuclear wasteland, remnants of a virus outbreak- anyone with access to the old world technology is going to have the upper hand.
For this, we need a system that can be designed from scavenged parts. It can produce complex electronics such as micro controllers.
This is where Collapse OS comes in.
Collapse OS is a new operating system. It is an open-source operating system being built for humanity’s darkest times. This operating system can be built without external sources on a machine. It built from scavenged parts with low-tech tools.

It is a Z80 kernel and a collection of programs, documentation, and tools that allow you to assemble an OS. It can:
- Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPU’s.
- Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, display).
- Edit text files.
- Run-on minimal and improvised machines
- Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
- Replicate itself.
Virgil Dupras, the creator of Collapse OS says:
“I could finish it by myself, but it would be more fun to do with other developers. Participation requires a set of inclinations and skills. I think that few people fitting requirements exist. But if they do, I’d like to find them.
It’s a bit like a pet project and not an attempt at a serious solution.
